Kuehler, Rushing square-off in Union County runoff

Posted: Updated:
The Union County Commissioner race appears to be two-thirds of the way decided.

This morning, Tracy Kuehler filed for a runoff election. Only Jerry Simpson finished with more than 40 percent of the votes on a nine-person ballot. In a race for three seats, this means that two seats could be contested for a runoff, by those finishing in fourth or fifth place.

Kuehler, a former-commissioner, finished fourth and would have missed out on a commissioner seat by not filing for a runoff. She finished 101 votes shy of Stony Rushing, the third-place finisher.

Without a runoff, Rushing would have been in as a commissioner.

Kuehler originally ran as part of a group of three with Lance Simpson and Kim Ormiston. Lance Simpson finished second and his seat will not be challenged, as Ormiston did not file for a runoff.

Only Republicans ran in the primary election for commissioner. So, in all likelihood, the three primary winners will take the three open seats.

"The only other way is if a registered voter came in and filed as an unaffiliated candidate for the November ballot," Board of Elections Director John Whitley said. "They would have to meet a petition deadline which occurs on June 27."

Fifty-two poll sites will be open, the same as a standard primary, but there will only be one early voting site, which will be in the Griffin Room of the Union County Public Library.

The runoff election could cost in excess of $80,000 according to Whitley.

Early voting starts July 3 and ends July 12 at 1 p.m. The election will be on Tuesday, July 15 and the polls will be open from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
