China Grove Elementary Locked Down, Teacher Arrested for Assaulting Student

Posted: Updated:
Chief Eddie Kluttz of China Grove Police says "comments" made by China Grove Elementary teacher Rebecca Wilson Daniel are what led Rowan County Schools to put the two district offices and China Grove Elementary on lockdown Thursday.

Kluttz didn't have specifics on the comments but says Daniel was arrested today at her home on a charge of assault of a child under 12. Kluttz says the victim was a student in Daniel's class.

The charge is a misdemeanor charge. Kluttz says Daniel was released by a magistrate judge with a written promise to return to court July 8.

The school district says Daniel was suspended with pay and she's worked for the district for 26 years, including 17 years at China Grove Elementary.

The district also locked down two of its offices located on Ellis Street and Long Street. Those lock downs will remain in effect through the school day Thursday.

The lock down means:

  • All the school's doors are locked
  • Students cannot leave the building
  • The school has no outside activities
  • Parents can come into the school, but doors remain locked after they enter and leave
  • Classes continue as normal
As of about 2 pm, a little more than 100 kids had been checked out early from China Grove Elementary. The school has 600 students enrolled.

Rita Foil with the Rowan-Salisbury School System says the lock down is a precautionary measure.

Some parents of students who attend China Grove Elementary were understandably worried, and some are upset at the school district for the way they spread the word.

The district first used a phone system to send an automated message. Parents started dialing 9-1-1. That's when the school district sent out a second automated notification to everyone.
