The most competitive team at Piedmont IB Middle School isn't on a field. Practice takes place inside of multiple classrooms. That's because the team studies science.

The team focuses on 23 different events. Each one is scored and goes toward a cumulative score. Lowest score wins.

Last month, Piedmont IB blew the rest of the North Carolina competition out of the water and scored a 96. Second place earned 225 points.

Students compete in all kinds of events ranging from building cars and launching bottle rockets to testing on the solar system and insects.

They will head out Friday to the national competition at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The championship will be treated just like the Olympics, complete with opening ceremonies Friday night followed by a two day competition.
