Parents Concerned about Bathroom Clause

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON - Public parks, the zoo, restaurants, malls among many others would have to abide by this new city law if it passes. But what worries parents is the bathroom clause, mentioned in today’s lengthy agenda.

The confusion among parents is if a transgender person, for example a man who now represents himself as a woman, would be allowed into a women’s restroom?  Many parents tell Fox 26 news, they understand it draws a fine line between protecting their loved ones and what others call discrimination.

Council members explained to us today that transgender people are currently going into these restrooms, but what’s changing is that if a person or business owner tells them they cannot, now they have recourse to file a complaint in Houston instead of going to the state or federal level, where the process can be very costly.

We spoke to several parents today who are were divided on this issue.

Chris Haley, a concerned mother told us,“I don’t think I would like that, but that doesn't  mean I have anything against transgender people. I just don't think it’s right. It’s a private area.

“If they are actually transiting and the process is finished, that wouldn't bother me. But if it’s a male dressed like a female I would …..because your still a male.

There are exemptions included in the proposed ordinance and those are churches, clubs with private memberships, and daycares and nurseries privately owned among others.
