Man Sexually Assaults Real Estate Agent

Posted: Updated:
Salisbury, NC - A real estate agent in Salisbury was sexually assaulted in a Salisbury home she thought he was interested in buying.

According to Salisbury Police, 49 year old Brian Harold Cooper told the agent he was interested in buying a house. They made an appointment for her to show him the home Tuesday. The agent drove Cooper to the home.

Once they got inside, Cooper choked the agent, pulled out a knife, and threatened to kill her. Police say he sexually assaulted her in the home.

Next, he ordered her to take him to another home he was supposed to see that day. The agent told him she needed to call her office so they wouldn't think something is wrong. She used a code word to let her office know something was wrong.

When Cooper and the agent got to the second house, Cooper assaulted the agent again. A second agent, a man, walked into the home, not knowing what was going on. The agent who had been assaulted ran out of the house and called police.

Here's where it gets strange: the male agent gave Cooper a ride back to the real estate agency. By the time police got to the agency's office, Cooper had left.

Police arrested Cooper later at his home. He's charged with 1 count of first degree rape, 1 count of attempted first degree rape, 2 counts of first degree sexual assault, 1 count of felonious restraint and 1 count of first degree kidnapping. His bond is set at $1.5 million.

Even with the miscommunication about how serious the agent's situation was, police say, the code word likely saved her life.

Matt Creech was working at a house near the home where the realtor was attacked. Creech said, “It just shocked me. I couldn’t believe it. I know people’s crazy, but I didn’t know it was going on right beside us.”

Bonnie Everson is a realtor in Salisbury. She does not work for the same agency that employs the woman who was attacked. Everson said, “We’re just so thankful that she remembered what she was trained to do.” Everson went on to say, “It certainly has been a very sad experience. I think we all share in feeling for the agent involved and knowing that it could be any one of us at any time.”
