The Charlotte Douglas International Airport discussed the controversial cab contracts at the Charlotte City Council meeting tonight. The controversy comes from there being 12 taxi companies at the Airport in 2011 being reduced to only three. People are also wondering if this has any ties to the former Mayor Patrick cannon’s allegations.

City manager Ron Carlee started the meeting by saying they would not be addressing any criminal activity. The meeting was intended as background information and to outline the future of the contracts.

The airport currently has about 160 permits issued to three companies: Yellow Cab, City Cab, and Crown Cab

But other cab companies have sued, saying the “fix was in” when those three contracts were handed out.

Taxi drivers who missed out on the lucrative airport deal say it has as much to do with “politics” as “performance.”

One of them, Myahmed Alaoui, at the city council meeting spoke to us right after the presentation.

“There’s a game behind this. And they really need to sit down with the drivers and company owners one on one and have a big meeting and talk about it in the open," Alaoui said.

The contracts are up for renewal in July. Representatives of the airport say they want to create the best competitive environment.

But having only three taxi companies to choose from isn’t much competition if you ask the cabbies who are missing out on airport business.
