More than 100 men took the streets to walk a mile in high heels. There was a special reason behind it all; it was to raise money for Safe Alliance, a non-profit organization in Charlotte. Safe Alliance assists and houses victims of domestic violence.

Otis is the newest member of the Newman family.

He and a couple dozen other animals call "Rescue Ranch" in Statesville home.

"It really started me trying to centralize my efforts and what I wanted to do in the animal care industry," says Krissie Newman, wife of NASCAR driver, Ryan Newman.

While her husband, Ryan Newman is racing around the track, Krissie Newman is racing around the ranch.

"23 animals on property and it, it goes from cows, goats, down to rabbits, bearded dragons, and snakes."

Education about responsible pet ownership and taking care of animals drove Newman to start rescue ranch.

"Making a campus for people and animals to learn about compassion for animals, the different animals and what they need in their environments," says Newman.

She also helps animals find their "forever homes" by working with various adoption agencies in North Carolina.

Finding animals a home isn't something new to Newman.

"I had mice I stole from a friend of mine who had snakes. I didn't want his snakes to eat the mouse so I would take them home with me and try to hide them from my parents. I've done birds, cats, dogs, you name it."

Volunteers share the same love and compassion for the animals.

"It gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning.   Look forward to seeing these people, seeing the animals, and people who come in and visit the place," says volunteer Bob McCaulley.

Race fans also play a huge part in "Rescue Ranch."

"There are so many fans out there that bring their animals with them to the race tracks and that have a love for animals so to have a place like this where they can come and hang out for the day while they are done here for speed weeks and just do something in the area and have somewhere to hang out," says Newman.
