The Latin American Coalition is receiving hate mails that use derogatory words for Hispanics, other minorities, and even children of immigrants, calling them anchor babies.

They shared these letters with us, to show people just how hurtful they can be for an entire community.

Armando Bellmas, director of communications at LAC says the hate mail come in regularly. He’s reported it to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department just in case anything happens.

“It is disheartening that people feel that way, that people are racists and use this nasty language so it’s a little disheartening,” Bellmas said.

The LAC says their purpose is to integrate, advocate, and celebrate immigration. The letters serve as a reminder for them that not everyone supports their purpose.

“We’re all afraid of things we don’t know about. We’re all afraid of venturing into the unknown. For some people, other people who come to the Charlotte area who are of a different culture, be the Hispanics, Somalis, Vietnamese, whatever we may be, that’s scary for some people because of the different language and culture,” he said.

Bellmas says the best way to combat opposition is through education and holding programs. He hopes the letters will not continue to be a pattern. Right now his focus for LAC is to help immigrants live the American Dream.
