I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

There are no beautiful beaches or exotic volcanoes. But for these baseball players from Waipahu, Hawaii, Shelby, North Carolina is paradise. This team is in Shelby for the American Legion World Series. Matthews, NC - Elena and Alexis Mizrahi welcome new faces at their restaurant.

"We have French people, people from China, like all different accents, and Argentina… Colombia," says Elena.

The mother and daughter team own Royal Café & Creperie in Matthews. They've been open since February 2013 and business is going great.

They know first hand how important tourism is to business. Just this week North Carolina's Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker and Governor Pat McCrory announced record visitor spending in the state. They also noted that the tourism industry grew in every county in the state.

Today the town of Matthews held an economic development summit. North Carolina’s Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker was there to offer advice to business owners. She emphasized community businesses need to embrace new ways of drawing people in.

"I’m pleased with what I see Matthews doing, particularly with the new sports complex. Amateur sports and nonprofessional sports, in a lot of cases generate more income for communities than do professional sports..." Decker said.

Alexis agrees that the Sportsplex has been good for their creperie.

"The sports complex that’s just been built behind us has brought in a lot of outsiders from different states for games like lacrosse and soccer, so that’s been actually bringing more people into the area," said Alexis.

Secretary Decker also emphasized things like healthy, happy employees and education as being essential to economic development.

Elena is happy to be operating in the community of Matthews, as she says they embrace their own.

"We are very happy because a lot of people take us as their family," she says.
