PHOENIX (AP) - Nine American Indian tribes will share more than $700,000 in federal funds meant to spur energy development in Indian Country.

U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell made the announcement Wednesday in Phoenix. The funding goes to nine tribes in Arizona, Alaska, California, New Mexico, New York and Washington state.

Jewell also announced approval of a second utility-scale solar project on the Moapa River Indian Reservation, about 20 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The 200-megawatt project is expected to generate enough power for 60,000 homes annually.

Another 250-megawatt solar project on the reservation was approved in 2012 and is under construction. Federal officials say it could become operational next year and power up to 100,000 homes.
