(Uptown Charlotte, NC) – Reid Brignac broke a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly in sixth inning and then broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the 11th inning as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs beat the Charlotte Knights 3-2 on Wednesday in game three of the four-game series from BB&T Ballpark. The loss snapped Charlotte’s two-game win-streak.
Charlotte left-handed reliever David Purcey (0-2, 3.50) retired the first two batters in the 11th inning, but Brignac ripped a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall to give Lehigh Valley the 3-2 lead. It was Brignac’s third home run of the season.
Lehigh Valley’s Luis Garcia came on in relief to pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning and retired the Knights in order to earn his sixth save of the season. Seth Rosin (1-1, 5.79) tossed two shutout innings to earn the win for Lehigh Valley.
The Knights scored their first run of the game in the second inning on a Tyler Saladino RBI double. Saladino drove in Hector Gimenez, which tied the game at 1-1.
Brignac gave the ‘Pigs their second lead of the game with his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Their lead didn’t last long though as the Knights came back to score a run in the bottom of the sixth on an Andy Wilkins RBI double.
The game stayed tied until Brignac’s game-winner in the 11th inning.
RHP Erik Johnson started for the Knights and allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings but did not factor in the decision. He walked one and struck-out four batters. Carlos Sanchez extended his hit-streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 23 straight games.
The two teams will conclude their series on Thursday night. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. game, which features Thirsty Thursday ™, presented by Hickory Tavern. White Sox RHP Felipe Paulino (0-0, 4.50) is expected to get the nod for the Charlotte Knights on a Major League rehab assignment from Chicago. The IronPigs will hand the ball to LHP David Buchanan (4-0, 3.12).
