Middle School Student Charged with Assault: Inspired by Youtube

Posted: Updated:
York, S.C. - A York Middle School student was charged with assault and arrested Monday after he slapped a classmate.

A substitute teacher at the school reported the incident to an officer working at the school. She said a male student slapped a female causing her to have a busted lip.

Both students were removed from class and taken to the principal's office. The victim called her mother to tell her what had happened and she decided to press charges.

The boy admitted to slapping the victim, but said he never meant to hurt her. He claims he was "playing around" and got the idea from Youtube videos called "smack cam."

"Smack cam" videos have become popular and feature people recording other people as they are unexpectedly smacked.

There were no recordings of the incident in the school. The boy was charged with assault and battery in the 3rd degree and has been summoned to family court. The case was closed by arrest.

The names of the victim and the boy who slapped her have been withheld because they are minors. Both are 12 years old.
