UNCC Teams Recognized By NCAA For Academic Success

Posted: Updated:

Charlotte, N.C. (Courtesy of UNCC Athletics)– The Charlotte 49ers Department of Athletics had three teams receive the NCAA Public Recognition Award, based on the NCAA Division I 2013-13 Academic Progress Rate (APR). The NCAA listed Charlotte’s men’s and women’s tennis teams and the men’s cross country team among the programs with outstanding numbers.

The NCAA honors teams that earned multi-year APR scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. There were 1,049 NCAA Division I sports teams (631 women's and 418 men's or mixed teams) honored by the NCAA for earning Public Recognition Awards.

The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, with the majority of top 10 teams earning a perfect APR.

The Charlotte women's tennis program made the list of honored teams for the sixth consecutive year.

“I am extremely proud of our academic success,” Charlotte 49ers women’s tennis coach Michaela Gorman said. “Our student athletes work tirelessly and I am happy for them that the NCAA recognized them for this.”

The men's cross country team has appeared on the recognition list four straight years.

“Year in and out, I’m impressed by our athlete’s commitment to both academics and athletics,” Charlotte 49ers cross country coach Ed Schlichter said. “They dedicate so much time and effort to their personal and professional success that it energizes the entire team. These gentlemen continue to make me proud and help raise the profile of the program. It is great for them to not only set high goals but, to also put in the work to get there.”

The men's tennis program appears on the recognition list for the third straight year.

"I'm very proud of our student-athletes,” Charlotte 49ers men’s tennis coach Billy Boykin said. “They work hard in the classroom and it's nice for the NCAA to recognize their efforts."

Charlotte has had at least one team honored by the NCAA in each of the nine years of the program.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes both retention at an institution and academic eligibility in its calculation.

Eight different programs at Charlotte have been honored by the NCAA for outstanding APR scores, with seven earning multiple-year recognition.

A total of 275 Division I schools (and seven in other divisions who have a sport competing in Division I) placed at least one team on the top APR list, up 19 from last year.
