Police: Mom Turns In Teen Accused Of Store Attack Caught On Video

PHILADELPHIA -

A teenager who robbed and attacked a 67-year-old woman inside a West Philadelphia wig store has turned himself in, investigators say.

The 14-year-old teen was in custody Wednesday morning at Southwest Detectives waiting to be formally charged.

Five days before Mothers' Day, the teen's mother did the right thing and the hard thing after she saw the surveillance video on last night's newscast of her own son allegedly pummeling a 67-year-old store owner less than half his size.

The surveillance video got viewers, police and the big kid's mom outraged. The store owner was attacked just after 7 a.m. Tuesday. Police allege that he stopped in to rob her on his way in to school.

It was exactly one week after he allegedly robbed the same store and owner.

She apparently recognized him as soon as he walked in Tuesday morning and tried to call police.

That's when he started punching, stomping and shoving her into the store shelves and then took her phone from her.

After mom saw this on the 10 o'clock news last night, she was there with him when he confessed to attacking the small, frail woman, police tell us.

This 14-year-old – who police estimate weighs as much as 230 pounds and is close to 6 feet tall – was already in a special Philadelphia public school for troubled kids because he was also accused of beating up a teacher last fall.

Police tell us he threw the woman's cell phone away near his school, telling the detectives he knew they could trace it to him.

The week before he was in the same store in a dark-hooded sweatshirt. That was when he swiped a handful of cash from the register and ran out.

The beauty supply store on North 54th Street he was robbing in the Wynnefield section close to the kid's school.

This 14-year-old likely won't be going back. He's now going to be charged with aggravated assault, robbery and other crimes as a juvenile and not just sent back to the streets and enrolled in a school for troubled kids.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reports that detectives expect him to be locked up for good in a juvenile detention facility until he's 18, especially after, they say, a juvenile judge sees this surveillance video and this 14-year-old's history of beating up adults.

The 67-year-old store owner has cuts, bruises and is still very swollen. But the news of an arrest may help her recovery. Her surveillance camera's clear pictures likely aided with the arrest.
