Daniel Papandrea, a Charlotte realtor for sixteen years, had a house up for sale. But somehow, the home ended up on many websites under the “for rent” category.

“My gut reaction was, ‘You made a mistake. This can’t be. It’s not for rent. Excuse me. Where did you come up with this idea that it’s for rent?’” he said.

He says scammers used pictures and information of his listings to create fake rental ads. The crook lures the potential tenant with paperwork, asking them for personal information and to wire in money.

Papandrea ended up reporting the scam to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the FBI.

Tom Bartholomy, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau says scammers convince people to wire them money.

“What they’re really trying to attract is people not particularly in the Charlotte area, but people from out of the area, from across the country in San Francisco or maybe from Europe,” Bartholomy said.

He says be careful of the following red flags:

- If the person isn’t around to show them the house.

- If they’re asked to wire money for down payment

- If the price of the rent is suspiciously low.

Bartholomy says to have your guard up at all times.

Tom – “I think the basic instinct is to be trusting if all the trappings around it look legitimate,” he said.
