Concord, NC - Since 1985, Sam Bass has created the covers for the race programs at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and he was also named NASCAR's first officially licensed artist. His paintings capture iconic moments in NASCAR’s history. Some of the most popular paint schemes in recent memory also carry his designs.

Like a lot of people who work in and around NASCAR, his association started as a fan.

“I went to my first race when I was 7-years-old and I was just captivated from minute one,” said Bass. “The speed, the color, the excitement; it was just visually overwhelming.”

It was then that Bass began drawing cars and drivers. He soon had the chance to meet NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison, who quickly became his favorite driver.

Years later, Bass took a painting to the race at Talladega Superspeedway for Allison to sign. As Allison was autographing the piece, other race teams began to take notice of the talented painter. That weekend, Bass received his first NASCAR related commissions for original artwork.

“I want to be a good positive ambassador for this sport,” he said. “I began this dream as a race fan and I hope that when I paint and draw or design race cars, I’m doing stuff that has broad appeal to the race fan, because I am one. Whenever I create something new, I don’t want it to look like something that has been done before, and I also want to be conscientious of the fact that I am having a hand in changing the sport.”

The Sam Bass Gallery is open and behind the scenes tours are planned for the Sprint All-Star and Coca-Cola 600 race weeks. For more information, visit sambass.com.
