Moving? If so you picked the right month to do so. May is national moving month. Moving is a stress test for just about everyone but taking the extra time to pick a reliable moving company will save you time and possibly some serious cash.

According to the Better Business Bureau close to 60,000 people have searched locally for moving companies over the last three years. 203 complaints were filed with the BBB against local moving companies during that same time period. The majority of the complaints were damage related.

"Complaints primarily focus on damaged or lost goods," said BBB President Tom Bartholomy.

The BBB has put together some tips on how to have a smooth move. This is there list:
Do your homework. Check the moving companies record.
Get a written contract. Read over the terms and conditions of the contract. Make sure pick-up and delivery dates are spelled out.
Verify licensing. State regulations can vary, all interstate movers must, at minimum, be licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Adminstration and are assigned a motor carrier number you can verify.
Confirm insurance coverage. Ask the company ffor a copy of its Certificate of Insurance to verify that the mover is insured.
Get at least three in-home estimates. No legitimate mover will offer to give youa firm estimate on-line or over the telephone.
Know your rights. Research your rights as a consumer in the state you currently reside and in the state where you are moving.
Call the police. If your moving company holds your belongings hostage in order to make you pay more than the agreed upon contract price.
