Hey, Hey Carolinas! I'm doing the job I love in the place I love, my hometown. I grew up in Concord and I'm grateful to be back home telling the stories of such wonderful people in and around the Charlotte area.

Voters turned out in big numbers across the Charlotte region for early voting, which started April 24 and ended May 3. Early voting turnout in Rowan, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg Counties topped numbers from 2010.

Cabarrus County had 2,017 people vote early in the 2010 primary and 2,541 early voters for this year’s primary. Rowan County had 2,641 people vote early in the 2010 primary and 4,056 early voters for this year’s primary. Mecklenburg County had the highest increase of the three counties with 1,590 early voters during the primary in 2010 and 13,590 people vote early during this year’s primary.

Mecklenburg County’s Elections Director tells My Fox Carolinas one big reason for the huge increase in the number of early voters is likely because there was only one early voting site in 2010, and there were 13 sites this year.

18 year old Kyara Gage voted for the first time Saturday. Gage said, “Younger people should vote because we have different needs.” She went on to say, “I feel like I’m really having a say in my community, so that was pretty cool.”

A new state law that went into effect for this primary didn’t give people as many days to vote early as in the past. Voter Brady Williams said, “We’ve had a lot more mailers come to our house this year, and then just coming here to the library, we get a lot more fliers, people giving us information about the candidates.” Voter Keith Wassum said, “Quite often primaries are the place decisions are made so sometimes if you don’t come for the primary, you’re missing the whole thing.”
