JCSU : First HBCU to Welcome Latino Fraternity On Campus

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, NC -   (WJZY)- There is a new brotherhood on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. is the first Latin fraternity at JCSU and at a Historically Black College in the United States (HBCU).

The brothers say the idea to start the fraternity came up after they all became friends.“It was a group of us Latinos just coming to campus about 20 of us, and we all just got together,” Luis Dominguez, said. “We guys were bonding and just wanted to take it a step further.”

The six founding brothers say it took two and a half years to complete the process to bring Lambda Theta Phi JCSU’s campus, and so far everyone has been welcoming.

There are five guiding principles that the fraternity follows: brotherhood, leadership, academic excellence, Latin unity, and service. The six founding brothers say they plan to use the principles to encourage other Latinos to continue their education, and hopefully change the stereotypes of Latinos.

The president of the university, Dr. Ronald Carter, says he is delighted the difference that these students are making. “Johnson C. Smith is reaching its goal as a new urban university that emphasizes diversity.”

This brand-new fraternity on JCSU's campus, may someday end up in the history books.
