HUNTERSVILLE, NC -

When Josh Wise hits the track in Talladega, Al. this weekend, his Phil Parsons Racing No. 98 Ford will carry the Dogecoin sponsorship. While a new sponsor is a good thing, it’s the way the internet currency landed on the car’s fenders that has attracted attention from around the globe.

The saga starts in Chicago, Ill. where a fan was watching the Bristol race on Fox and noticed Wise and his unsponsored car running well.

“The Reddit community saw him race the leaders to stay on the lead,” said Denis Pavel. “We have never seen an under funded team race so hard to stay on the lead lap.”

Pavel saw this as an opportunity to help out a race team. He prompted the Dogecoin community to look at raising money for a race sponsorship. A few days later, and after a 23rd place finish at Bristol, Josh Wise got wind of his efforts.

“Someone actually sent me a link and I clicked it,” said Wise.

Pavel and his Reddit community raised $67.8 million Dogecoins to sponsor the car, which is worth nearly $55,000 .

Dogecoin bills itself as “a decentralized, peer-to-peer digital currency.” The Dogecoin community has a history of raising money for various causes. Recently, the group raised money to help the Jamaican Bobsled team get to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. However, Pavel was not sure if the community would embrace the idea of sponsoring a car in NASCAR.

“Usually, when something NASCAR comes up, it’s a typical stereotype and it usually gets down voted and no one ever sees it,” he said. “But this time it was a huge surprise because everyone wanted to do it.”

Team owner Phil Parsons was amazed by the success of the campaign.

“Sure enough, gosh, in a week’s time, maybe a little over a week’s time it was done, it was already done,” said Parsons. “It’s really taken a life of its own. It’s been a blast. It’s been a great ride.”

Talladega may not be the only track where the No. 98 competes with a Dogecoin sponsorship.

“We launched an initiative along with their help, with Reddit and Dogecoin, to try and vote us into the All-Star Race,” said Parsons.

Wise said, “It would be pretty tough to get more votes than Danica Patrick, but they’re making a big effort at it. It will be pretty epic if they pull it off.”

Fans can visit NASCAR.com to vote-in a driver who is not already in the field through other qualifying methods. Pavel says the Reddit users are working hard to get Wise in the field.

“Every single day is going to be a post saying vote for Josh Wise, let’s not forget,” said Pavel. “Everyone’s been doing it, there’s someone who’s been doing it for 24-hours straight.”

The Dogecoin sponsored No. 98 hits the track in Talladega this weekend. Catch qualifying on My Fox Carolinas Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. The race airs Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
