Councilwoman Accused Of Alleged Racist Rant In Belleville

Posted: Updated:
Belleville, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Longtime Belleville Councilwoman Marie Strumolo Burke is in hot water after allegedly going on a racist rant back in October. Mayor Raymond Kimble says her rant was picked up in the background of a voicemail to another councilman, who played it for the Mayor.

On the recording you can hear a woman say: “This is going to be a f****** n***** town.”

The recording has since been played at multiple town meetings and the mayor says that this just isn’t right.

“It upset me very much. We’re a diverse community and for a politician, any politician to come out with that type of statement, when she represents the whole town, all the people in the town, it really upset me,” Kimble said.

The councilwoman reportedly denies it’s her voice on the recording and accuses the mayor of dirty politics.

“The union official from the public works confronted her, she’s an African American and she confronted her and she denied it again, so a town employee decided to get it authenticated and that’s where we’re at,” the mayor explained.

A group of concerned citizens led by Belleville Department of Public Works employee Thomas Grolimond, who was hired during the mayor’s tenure, paid $1300 dollars to have the audio tape authenticated by a forensics lab. Ed Primeau of Primeau Forensics is the man responsible for authenticated the tape.

“Listening to it repeatedly using critical listening skills that I’ve developed over 30 years, I arrived at an opinion. And my opinion is an 85% degree of certainty that the person speaking at the back of the voicemail message is the same person that is speaking at the town council meetings,” Primeau explained.

Now the question remains, what was the alleged rant all about? The mayor guesses that she was talking about the tax rate going up and she may have thought that “people would sell and everybody would run”.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
