Officials break ground for new police precinct

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The groundbreaking ceremony for a new 5th precinct building in Detroit took place Thursday.

Mayor Mike Duggan and Chief James Craig were there. Watch FOX 2's Robin Murdoch's report to hear their remarks.

The old building that housed the precinct closed in September of 2002 and combined with the 9th precinct, forcing 5th precinct residents to travel miles just to file a police report.

Construction will start in June. The building is expected to open in December. Craig said funding for the project is part of the city's bankruptcy restructuring plan.
