Novant Health Plans To File For More Hospital Beds After State Grants to CMC

Posted: Updated:
About 4 months ago, 2 local hospitals battled beds from over the state - Novant and CMC.

The state determined that Mecklenburg County would get 40 beds.

The state granted all the beds to CMC (Carolinas Medical Center).

Novant Health’s Huntersville campus filed for 17 of those 40 beds but didn’t get them.

Now, they plan to appeal to the state.

“We have a lot of people who want our services. Having more beds means we can service more people,” said Novant Health’s President Tonya Blackmon.

“We are unable to accept those patients when we are 100% occupied,” said Katrina King, who’s the Chief Nursing Officer at Novant Health.

Novant’s Huntersville campus can handle more than 30,000 patients in a year.

They’ve seen a 70% growth over the last decade.

While the number of patients continues to grow, the number of beds remains at 75.

“It certainly doesn’t make for a remarkable patient experience when you are in the ER waiting to be admitted and you are waiting for hours and hours for a bed,” said King.

Novant filed for 17 beds with the state but didn’t get them.

They plan to appeal to meet the community’s needs.

“If we don’t have the beds, those patients are transferred outside the community and they really want to stay here and be close to family,” said Blackmon.

“Every single we had 75 patients in house. In Feb we were 98% occupied,” said King.

The state looks at many things when deciding which hospital will get the beds including ER visits, the number of patients and the population of the county.

“If a patient has an emergency, they can be admitted here. But if we don’t have beds, they’ll have to be transferred somewhere else,” said Blackmon

“We want to serve everyone but it’s hard to do when you don’t have the capacity to do so,” said King

Once the state makes it decisions, it’ll take about a year to get it fixed and fitted in the hospital.
