Google Fiber could bring 100x faster internet to Charlotte

Posted: Updated:
Google Fiber could be bringing their high-speed broadband service to Charlotte.

The residential broadband is up to 100-times faster than conventional broadband service -- there is nothing close to this in Charlotte today.

Not only could it help existing businesses and start-ups, but it could help stimulate future economic development.

Google Fiber is hard to come by. Currently, only three other cities in the United States are live with it -- Austin, TX, Kansas City, MO and Provo, UT.

"If you take a look at what's happened in the other markets where Google Fiber went in, entrepreneurship really flourished," Alan Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick is part of CharlotteHeartsGoogle.com -- a group that is pushing for the service.

"We want to show Google that Charlotte wants the fiber and that we can't wait to get it," Fitzpatrick said.

Charlotte is on a list of nine areas Google is considering for the service, including the Raleigh-Durham area.

What's good for prospective customers, if Google chooses Charlotte, is that the pricing is fairly low. Google Fiber in Kansas City costs around $70-per month for internet and $120 for an internet/television combination.

City Council has approved the plan on their end. They have until May 1 to submit proper paperwork to Google. From then, Google will decide before Dec. 31, 2014 on whether or not Charlotte will be in it's plans.

MyFoxCarolinas spoke with a Google representative who said Google hopes they can approve all nine areas for Google Fiber and said "This is not a competition."

If you chain your dog outside and you live in Kannapolis, there are new regulations being put in place to ensure your pup is safe when you leave the yard. Many people chain their dog outside for only a few minutes, but others leave their dogs outside in the heat for the entire day. The Humane Society in Concord has seen 5-6 dogs die due to strangulation from their chains in recent months. Though the City of Kannapolis has not had any formal complaints of dogs chained for long periods of time,...
