Detroit church fined for trash dumped on other properties

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Members of a Detroit church have been trying to clean up their neighborhood, but illegal dumpers have taken over and are leaving trash everyone. The trash has gotten so bad, the church now faces fines from the city.

Pastor Darthanian Nichols of Breaking Chains Outreach Ministry tells FOX 2's Amy Lange an envelope came to the church's address containing two tickets for blight violation, one for $800 and one for $1,000. However, the ticket for $1,000 was written for an address that is three miles away from the church.

FOX 2 contacted the mayor's office, and a spokesperson says they are looking into getting the matter resolved.

UPDATED TO ADD:
The city met with the church Wednesday and, since the property is not theirs and they did not dump the trash, the city is dismissing the ticket.

Meanwhile, the church's congregation says their focus is still on cleaning up the neighborhood.

They have planned a cleanup event for May 10 and are inviting volunteers to help clean up their streets.

The church is located at 19603 Regent St., near the intersections of E. State Fair Street and Gratiot Avenue.
