In Depth Report: Project S.T.O.R.M.

Posted: Updated:
Chester, SC - (WJZY) From songs, to movies, to television shows, American pop culture seems to glorify going to jail. The Chester County Sheriff’s Department in Chester, SC wants to put an end to the glitz and glam some teenagers associate with prison.

Last January, Sheriff Alex Underwood created the Project Showing Teens Our Real Mission (S.T.O.R.M.) Program. The program targets at-risk youth in Chester and surrounding counties who are being disrespectful to their parents and getting in a lot of trouble at school.

The program's objectives are to provide guidance to at-risk youth, promote personal and social responsibility, discourage the involvement of youth in gangs, and to promote the importance of an education.

But their tough-love methods are more like what you may have seen on the television show “Beyond Scared Straight.”

Officer: Jail is no fun

My Fox Carolinas got a behind the scenes look at what these kids experience with Project S.T.O.R.M. to make them change their mind about going to jail. The kids go through intense drills that officers say “tear them down to build them up to be better kids.”
