The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte Supports Teen with Cancer

Posted: Updated:

Cole Owens was diagnosed with Pediatric Cancer when he was 7 years old. Now, Cole and his mom Laura traveled to Charlotte from St. Louis, Missouri in November. They arrived in to seek treatment for the disease at the Levine Children’s Hospital.  The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte opened its doors to the mother and son, and the two say the journey has been uplifting.   Cole shared the good news with My Fox Carolinas.  “I’m Cancer-free for the second time in 7 years.  It feels amazing.”

Cole, who is now 13 years old, was diagnosed with a rare form of Cancer years ago, and the road has been long. Cole calls it bumpy.   “There has been ups and downs.  I try to stay positive through it all.”  Cole says there has been a saving’s grace through the ordeal.  The  Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte has  served as a safe haven for Cole and his family,  a family of survivors.  Cole’s mom says, “We have always had to seek care outside our home in St. Louis.  He was considered inoperable back then, and when he recurred in 2010, he was considered inoperable also.” Thanks to the doctors at the Levine Children’s Hospital, Cole is Cancer free, but it has been quite a journey.  The Owens family has traveled from city to city seeking care.

When families travel to cities like Charlotte  - from all over the world - for great medical care, the costs add up.  This is why the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte  steps in to provide support.   For 15 dollars a night - or whatever families can afford - families can stay at an affordable rate and eat meals provided by community groups.

This allows families like the Owens family to concentrate on what matters most.  Throughout the process, Cole meets other kids battling life threatening illness and injury.  Cole says the friendships are priceless.  “It's nice to know that they know what I'm going through, and that I am not alone.”
