2 Killed After High- Speed Chase, Man charged with Murder and DWI

Shelby, NC - (WJZY) Two people are dead and one in critical condition after a high-speed chase led to a crash in Shelby on Saturday afternoon.

Shelby police said an officer was monitoring traffic on Dixon Blvd. when he noticed a 2002 Buick Lesabre speeding.

The officer attempted to stop the driver, Demetrist Lendell Roberts, 34, but he kept going which led to a chase. However, due to traffic at the time, the officer called the chase off.

Shortly afterwards Roberts ran a red light at the intersection of Marion and Lafayette streets, hitting a 2007 Ford Taurus on the passenger side as it was traveling southbound.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third passenger, was ejected from the car and taken to Cleveland County Regional Medical Center.

Roberts was charged with:
- Two Counts of second-degree murder
- Driving while impaired
-Two Counts of felony death by vehicle
-Felony speed to elude arrest
-Driving while license revoked
-Speeding

Roberts is currently being held in the Cleveland County Detention Center without bond.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
