Hey, Hey Carolinas! I'm doing the job I love in the place I love, my hometown. I grew up in Concord and I'm grateful to be back home telling the stories of such wonderful people in and around the Charlotte area.

Elections officials are reporting strong voter turnout throughout the Charlotte region as early voting for the May 6th primary gets underway. Mecklenburg County says 1486 people voted on Thursday, the first day of early voting. That’s almost as many voters in one day as the entire two and a half weeks of early voting combined for the 2010 primary.

Rowan County had three times as many voters Thursday as the first day of early voting for the 2010 primary. According to Cabarrus County, by 4 p.m. Friday, 595 people had participated in early voting.

In Rowan County, elections officials say the fact that the law changed and voters now have fewer days to vote early could be the reason that there is higher turnout, but some voters say local politics is bringing them to the polls. Charles Hoffman said, “The actions that’s been taken by the county commissioners, school board, I think that’s what’s brought them out.” Shakira Humble said, “I think people are really wanting to see positive things for Salisbury, and it makes a big difference if they show it by coming out to vote. That’s the best way to do it.”

Elections officials say for this election, you’ll only be asked if you have an ID. You don’t have to show it this time. But workers are trying to get you ready for 2016 when you will have to present a photo ID.

County elections offices are required to keep the same number of hours for early voting as in the past unless they’ve applied for a waiver. The difference is the number of days of early voting, which has been reduced from 17 in the past to 10 currently.

Early voting ends May 3rd. The primary is May 6th.
