Researchers in Kannapolis Release Study That May Link Blueberries With Prevention of Parkinson's

Posted: Updated:
A team of researchers, including a group from the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, may have proven a link between eating blueberries and a reduction in the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Their study was published in a March issue of the scientific journal, Brain Research.

Dr. Mary Ann Lila of the North Carolina Research Campus was part of the team, which was led by scientists at Purdue University. Dr. Lila says the team took chemicals from fruits and tested them on mice and cell cultures, and they found out blueberries especially may be good at preventing Parkinson’s disease and also at helping patients who have already been diagnosed with the disease.

Dr. Lila said, “No doctor will really believe or prescribe a food to eat unless he knows what it is that’s good. It’s not witchcraft. It’s got to be scientifically proven.” And she adds that her research is something familiar to many people. Dr. Lila said, “Eat your fruits and vegetables, just like your grandmother always told you.”

Phyllis Beaver works at the Research Campus. Her husband has Parkinson’s disease. Beaver said, “You never know exactly when that disease might take a turn that would put you in a wheelchair or just tremendously limit the life you lead on this earth.”

Until Beaver heard about Dr. Lila’s research, she wasn’t aware of the possible link between eating blueberries and the reduced risk of Parkinson’s. Beaver said, “The research that’s being done here could actually impact my life through my husband’s life. And trust me, he’s eating lots of blueberries.”
