The Great Lime Shortage of 2014 - Everybody Panic!

Posted: Updated:

Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, but when it comes to all your favorite lime-infused drinks, there may be an issue.

There has been a major shortage of limes in the United States and while prices have been on the rise, quality has gone way downhill.

The general manager of Maverick Rock Taco in Charlotte, Maria Cajiao, says “they’ve gone from about the size of a baseball to the size of a ping pong ball. For a lot of applications we juice them and not a lot of juice coming out of the tiny limes.”

While some restaurants might cut their lime juice with other citrus fruits, Cajiao says Maverick Rock Taco will not ruin the integrity of their drinks, and despite the skyrocketing prices, they will not be jacking up the cost of their beverages for their Cinco de Mayo fiesta.

However, if you want a slice of lime with your taco, you better demand it.
