The Taste of Burke County is set for Tuesday, April 29. Area restaurants, breweries and wineries are preparing for the event, which is hosted by The Pilot Club.

"We have 25 vendors and that includes 20 food vendors, 3 wineries and two breweries," said Jan Richardson, president, The Pilot Club.

One of the breweries participating is Fonta Flora from downtown Morganton.

"We specialize in utilizing local ingredients from Burke County and the surrounding counties,” said Todd Boera, Fonta Flora. “We're getting ready to put ramps in a beer, we have a beer with local mushrooms."

Root and Vine, Grind Café Coffeehouse and Judge’s Riverside are among the many Burke restaurants participating.

"I'm a big fan of the pork, big fan of the pig,” said Brian Miller, Root and Vine. “Pork shoulder is a great discipline to know how to do correctly in the south. This is pretty much the culmination of what I've come up with."

Nathaniel Negli of Grind Café Coffeehouse commented, “We will be featuring our buffalo chicken salad on toast points and also, to give a little example of what we do at dinner time, I'll have a curry rubbed pork loin with a mango chutney."

Judge’s Riverside general manager Russ Fulenwider said, "My specialty is going to be smoked wings, with our special spice. It's just a different, unique taste."

While patrons will have the chance to taste a variety of Burke County food and drink, the event also serves as a fundraiser for the Morganton Community House.

"The community house is hugely important to the town,” said Boer. “It's a great meeting space for all sorts of different businesses and organizations around town."

The House has served as a meeting place for clubs and groups since 1933. The people who live in Burke County are working to raise money to fund renovations of the 80-year-old building through events like the Taste of Burke.

The Taste of Burke starts at 6 p.m. and is being held at the Morganton Community House. Advanced tickets are $25 and available at The Pie Hole.
