Father Returning From Deployment Makes His Daughter Easter Wish Come True

Posted: Updated:
A little girl’s received the best gift from the Easter bunny when her dad came home from Afghanistan Friday morning.

The surprise homecoming had been planned for months involving a large Easter Bunny costume and a small homemade heart.

When Steve Philipps of Glen Dale left for Afghanistan, his little girl, Avery, gave him something to keep with him.

"Avery gave me a heart before I left on deployment that I carried with me in my pocket so I had a little piece of her with me the whole time," said Phillips.

His daughter had a Daddy Doll with Steve's picture on it. Her mother, Lynsie Phillips, said Avery would sleep with it every night and that Steve had recorded a message on it that said he loved her and he would be home soon.

Steve had big plans for his homecoming. The US Navy officer ended up in a bunny suit at the Ohio Valley Mall.  His daughter had no clue Avery  her father was the  beloved bunny .

She was ready to tell the Easter Bunny for what she wanted most of all: her "Daddy home from Afghanistan".

Avery walked up to give him her Easter wish list. She showed him the Daddy Doll representing what she wanted most in the world and Phillips then showed her the heart. Avery realized nobody else has a homemade heart like that one.

Avery's grandmothers were beaming.

"I was very surprised. I'm sorry. It's just so emotional," grandmother Kathy Phillips said.

There were group hugs, smiles, and plans to go straight to the movies.
