Vinyl Makes a Comeback on Central Avenue

Posted: Updated:

Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- There's no black Friday sale or epic movie premiere.

Hundreds of fans are braving the cold and rainy day to get their hands on some exclusive vinyl.

"This is a modern artist: Childish Gambino. He's kind of a rapper. It comes with a screen play because his album is based on kind of a screenplay," said 22 year old Casey Woodie.

"Donny Hathaway live at the bitter end 1971. I'm old school," said Jim Messer.

Modern or mature, this yearly event - National Record Store Day - has it on the list.

"About 400 special releases come out today. Bunch of limited stuff, plus there's a sale in the store also. We're celebrating record stores and stuff you can't buy online or at big box stores," said Scott Wishart, owner of Lunchbox Records on Central Avenue.

Luchbox records is one of only two independent record stores in Charlotte.

"This was started by a small group of stores to model after comic book day. One of the stores that started it was also sells comic books. It has built upon itself and helped the resurgence of vinyl as well," said Scott, the store owner.

It's a kind of rebirth for music predating digital downloads on iTunes and Napster.

"It's more tangible. I think that now there's a lot of intangible options. It's nice to be able to have this whole package you can open up and touch and feel," said Casey.

She has been coming to Lunchbox Records with her friend since she was 15 years old.

"The music is warmer. I think that's the most commonly used adjective. It may not even be as great as a digital copy, but it has more life, it's more atmospheric," said Casey.

For others, these records bring back memories when vinyl was the main source of music.

"I remember riding a bus to uptown Charlotte when I was 13 years old to hit a record store on the square which in the mid 1960's specialized in soul and R&B," said Jim.

No matter your age or background, by the looks of it, vinyl is making a comeback.
