Zoo Makeover Kicks Flamingos From Home

Posted: Updated:

A multi-million dollar makeover for Florida's Zoo Miami is forcing flamingos from their homes.

"This front entrance to Zoo Miami is being demolished so we've gotta move these guys back to the conservation breeding area," explains Zoo Miami Communications Director, Ron Magil.

A team from the zoo's animal science department is charged with the task of corralling and catching 38 Caribbean flamingos.

The pretty pink birds will get examinations from veterinarians before being relocated to another section of the zoo.

Magil continues, "Basically it is controlled chaos. The staff here has done it many times they are skilled at what they do the objective is to get them caught and out as quickly as possible the longer it takes the more opportunity for the birds have to hurt themselves. So we want to do that as quickly as possible."

The entrance to the zoo is undergoing a $35 million dollar renovation.

When the project is complete it will include a brand new flamingo exhibit designed to give visitors a sneak peek at the animal collection on arrival.

"There's going to be an exhibit that serves as a main watering hole in the front of the ticket booths that will basically be the in point for the animals. You'll see cut outs of all the animals that will be walking down the entire front entry leading the way to the water way and that water hole is where you will see the flamingos," describes Magil.
