Clover Couple Forced To Remove Thousands of Tires On Their Property

Posted: Updated:

A Clover couple is forced to clean up thousands of tires on their property that have been illegally dumped since the 1950’s.

The Boheler’s bought their property in 1985 and did not know that a few dozen yards from their house, was a gully filled with tires that had been covered by dirt and clay.

But over the past few years, the tires have become exposed forcing DHEC to step in.

DHEC has ordered the couple to remove all of the tires or face a hefty penalty.

“I’m awake all night long sometimes thinking about how I’m going to get rid of these tires,” said Gary Boheler.

Day in and day out, he and his wife Donna lift the tires one by one from the ditch and load them into a truck

“My back and my hips and my legs are literally screaming at the end of the day,” said Donna Boheler.

The couple says people have been dumping tires there since the 1950’s, but they have never once put one tire into the gully.

“The people that did this, they are the ones that need to be getting them out. It’s not fair for them to have to undo what other people that done,” said friend Mac Mellon.

It will take months if not a year to complete the task.

It is expensive buying the trucks and equipment to remove the tires so Boheler is selling his car he received as a high school graduation present for extra cash.

“It’s sad but I need the money,” said Boheler.

The couple has had help from local church groups and neighbors, but they still have a lot of work ahead of them.

“You just keep praying and keep going,” said Boheler.
