Kings Mountain Casino: Worth the Gamble?

Posted: Updated:
In September of 2013 the Catawba Indian Nation filed (to the federal government) for the rights to purchase a 16.5 acrea polt in Cleveland County with the hopes to one day build an $800 million casino/resort.

Chester County Special Planner David Dear believes the casino is a much needed boost to a struggling local economy.

"If we felt like there was anything in there that was going to impact the citizens of Cleveland County negatively, from an economic stand point," Dear said, "we would not support it."

There are those who see the proposed casino as a flood gate of problems like crime and poverty.

Adam Forcade is the chairman of the Kings Mountain Awareness Group. This group wants the area leaders in both Kings Mountain and Cleveland County to focus on more than tourist revenue.

"A casino only thrives because people lose," said Forcade.

There is no time frame on when the federal government will make a decision on whether or not the land can be purchased by the Catawba Indian Nation. Dear feels as if the deal will happen.
