Boone, NC -

Jim Judson is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was wounded March 30, 1968, an injury that nearly took his leg and earned him the Purple Heart. The award is given to military members who have been wounded or killed while serving.

"We had just completed assignments,” said Judson. “I was in Saigon during The Tet Offensive. We were sent down to the Mekong Delta, which is highway 4 around the town of My Tho. And, we were on a fire-support base out there. At that time, during the attack, I was wounded."

After he completed his tour of duty, Judson returned home. He gave his medal to his father for safe keeping. However, when Judson’s father passed away, the medal was lost.

Judson figured he would never see it again, until he met Representative Virginia Foxx of North Carolina’s 5th District. Foxx was able to get a replacement for Judson.

"This is one of the best things that any member of Congress, any representative, can do,” said Foxx. “Because these medals are important, and I think the Purple Heart, in particular, because it does indicate that one was wounded.

“If there's any veteran out there that needs help from the federal government, I see it and my staff sees it as our responsibility to help them solve that problem."

Getting the new Purple Heart is significant to Judson, and he believes it will continue to help him heal.

"It meant a lot, a little emotion,” said Judson. “It brings back a lot of things that's buried. But, I'm very pleased that I did it. And now I can move on."
