Teens in Gaston County discover a great reward in giving.  Twins Camille and Claire Weiss, along with their pal Lucas Larrazabal wanted to usher in their 13th birthday in an unusual and extraordinary way.  They decided to make a special request on the party invitation for their joint 13th birthday celebration.  Camille says it was a moment of inspiration.  "We put on our invitation, 'in lieu of gifts, bring food for the animal shelter.'  Their guests showed up with arm loads of dog and cat food.

The teen trio gave 700 lbs of dog food to the Gaston County Animal Shelter, to the great surprise of Gaston County Assistant Police Chief, Joseph Ramey.  "We're very grateful. It's awful generous and awful kind of the students to think of us in this manner. It's not that often that we get a gift t of this type or one this large."

In fact, the shelter was in need of food.  This year, the shelter has received 1200 animals to date, compared with 700 this time last year.  The food supply, paid for by taxpayer dollars - was growing thin.

While the dogs and cats received the gift with great enthusiasm - wagging tails during our visit - the teens say they received the greatest gift of all.  Claire described it this way: "We felt very thankful and generous. It made us feel good."

So, is it better to give than to receive?  Lucas offers a convincing response.  "You get more of a good feeling when you give."
