Oakland Co. fighting the growing heroin epidemic

Posted: Updated:
OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (WJBK) - A heroin epidemic is spreading across metro Detroit communities.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says cases are up more than 300 percent from last year, and that appears to be the trend everywhere.

The dangerous drug is creeping into schools and communities nationwide, and parents are losing kids as they unintentionally overdose.

Oakland County Capt. Joseph Quisenberry says the behavior usually starts with a typical teenage experiment of looking to get high. Often, it starts with illegal prescription painkillers. Then, when that supply runs out, addicts turn to the cheaper option - heroin.

"It starts out as a social thing, I believe. Then it evolves into liking it and it becomes you're doing it by yourself," says Quisenberry.

Heroin is a depressant derived from morphine, which comes from poppy. It can slow down your system so much you stop breathing. It's considered highly addictive, which is why parents need to warn their kids about it.

"It affects good families and good kids," says Bouchard. "You, as a parent, have a short window in some of these cases to get involved or it can go so fast you'll lose them."

If you want to learn more, or help your kids understand this dangerous drug, the sheriff is hosting a meeting a town hall meeting about heroin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. It's at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Auditorium in Pontiac on. That is located at 1200 N. Telegraph Rd. in building 12E.
