Tax day has come and gone.  Still, it's an annul event that comes with its share of anxiety for many filers throughout the Carolinas.  This year, for married gay coupes in North and South Carolina, tax day came with an extra hitch.

For the first time in the Carolinas, married gay couples could file federal taxes jointly, but because gay marriage is not legal in either state, gay married couples had to file state taxes as individuals.  Charlotte businessman and former Charlotte City Council member, Billy Maddalon, says the issue does create complications for gay couples.  Billy and his partner Brooks have been together for 16 years.  "People want equal protection, and our families and our children deserve nothing less."

Accountants in the area say they saw an influx of customers with questions on the issue.  Kevin Garrison says "Typically they've just gotten married, so it's an exciting time for them.  In most cases, they're looking for bigger deductions that come with federal filings.  Then there are the state problems we have to mention.  They have to do everything separate."  Kevin's colleague, business strategist and accountant Joyce Saint-Cyr, underscores the difficulty.  "When you have a married couple and you ask them to separate their expenses, that's kind of challenging."

Tax preparers say seeking professional counsel can help couples meet the challenge without too many headaches.
