Charlotte Observer cartoonist wins Pulitzer

Posted: Updated:
Kevin Siers grew up loving cartoons, specifically, newspaper comics. In fact, he says he drew cartoons before he even knew how to write.

"I would draw weird balloons, dialogue balloons, and put scratches up there because I knew that's where the dialogue went" Siers said. "So I knew what they were saying but no one else could read the cartoons."

He never thought that he would be where he  is today -- the 2014 Pulitzer-Award Winning Editorial Cartoonist, who works for the Charlotte Observer.

The award was announced on Monday and includes $10,000.

"So they tell me," Siers joked. "I haven't seen it yet."

The award is the ultimate achievement for journalists.

"It's like winning an Oscar," Siers said. "It's a great award.

"It now means that when you get your name in the paper, they have to say, 'Pulitzer Prize Award-Winning Cartoonist Kevin Siers," he laughed.

Siers has editorial cartoons published five days a week for the Observer.
He has been in his role for 26 years.
