Utash talking more, confused after awaking from coma

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Steven Utash, the suburban Detroit motorist brutally beaten after he stopped to help a boy he accidentally hit with his pickup truck, continues his lengthy recovery after waking from a coma on Friday.

Utash had been in a medically induced coma for days following the April 2 incident on Detroit's east side.

His son, Joseph Utash, tells FOX 2's Amy Lange his father has moments of clarity, along with moments of confusion.

Joseph says his father is confused about where he works, among other things, but also says his father shows how happy he is to see the family and is remembering names. Steven also appears to have some recollection of what happened on Morang and Balfour streets that day.

"He's like, 'What happened to me was wrong, Joe. I didn't do anything wrong.' And I'm like, 'You just remember that. You didn't do anything wrong,'" says Joseph.

He also thanks the community for their continued support, and for all the donations that have poured in to aid with his father's medical bills.

Also on Friday, a fifth man was arraigned in the beating. A not-guilty plea was entered for 19-year-old Latrez Cummings. Like the other adults in the case, Cummings is charged with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

A 16-year-old is charged as a juvenile with assault and ethnic intimidation.

They are accused of beating Utash with their fists and feet after he stopped to help 10-year-old David Harris. Harris was struck after stepping into the path of Utash's truck. He suffered a leg and other injuries.
