Hey, Hey Carolinas! I'm doing the job I love in the place I love, my hometown. I grew up in Concord and I'm grateful to be back home telling the stories of such wonderful people in and around the Charlotte area.

Monday night the Cabarrus County Schools Board of Education approved its 2014-15 budget, which includes money to build a new Mount Pleasant Middle School.

Some residents and parents have spoken up at Mt. Pleasant Town Commission meetings asking that the facility be moved to a new location. The same request was made Monday at the school board meeting during the public comment portion. Tracey Brown is a parent. She said, "If your children were going to be attending Mount Pleasant Middle School, would you approach this opportunity any different than what's out there now?"

Brown added that the decision of where to put the school should be based on future growth. She said, "Just Friday they announced that Philip Morris sold. We heard 64 apartment units are going in Mt. Pleasant. Are we looking now? Are we looking 10 years out, 20 years out, 40 years out?"

Mt. Pleasant Mayor Del Eudy tells My Fox Carolinas the town commission will not weigh in on where the new school should be built, and they will leave the decision up to the school board.

Eudy says the people who have asked for a change in location have not specified a new location, but have instead said the current Mt. Pleasant Middle School could be renovated to perhaps bring in business, including a partnership with area technical colleges to teach night classes in the existing building or a plan to use some of the athletic facilities for private business ventures.

Some in the community have expressed concern over the cost of buying land to build a new school.

Monday night resident Susan Raines said, "Sometimes we are too quick to tear down existing facilities when a relatively small amount of funding and hard work on behalf of our public and civic leaders could serve the entire eastern part of Cabarrus County residents well into the future."

The location of the new school was not on the meeting agenda Monday. Therefore, no decision was made by the school board, which meets again May 5.
