Vietnam vets opt out of marching in Plymouth 4th of July parade

PLYMOUTH, Mich. (WJBK) - Some veterans in Plymouth have chosen not to participate in the annual 4th of July Parade, saying they feel disrespected by the community.

Members of the Vietnam Veterans of Americans Chapter 528 tell FOX 2's Andrea Isom they asked the organizers of the parade if their group could march earlier in the parade's lineup. They say many of the veterans are battling ailments or illnesses due to their age, and standing around waiting to march gets tiresome for many. They believed marching closer to the beginning of the parade would make them more comfortable.

Their request was denied and chapter member Ron King tells Isom they were essentially told, 'If you feel that way about it, don't return your application.' The Chapter then voted to not participate.

"We're not looking for any showmanship or any special courtesies. We just want to be respected for the veterans we are," King says.

The veterans tell Isom they would be honored to still participate in the parade if organizers came to a compromise.

Isom spoke with one of the parade's organizers. She reports he said he wishes the veterans do not feel disrespected because he does have the utmost respect for them and their service. He plans to meet with the membership soon so the matter can be resolved.
