Charlotte, N.C. (WJZY) -- This isn't a story about home improvement.

These folks are not construction workers.

Today hundreds of realtors volunteer to rehabilitate 17 homes in Mecklenburg and Iredell Counties.

This is a story about hope.

"I never really had anyone help in anything until now. It's really a blessing to see so many people come out and help me like they did," said James Jones.

Last year James Jones' family lost their house in a fire. It's a place they had called home for more than 20 years.

"I was at work and I didn't know, I was in shock when I pulled around the corner and saw my house on fire. I was just bombarded. I didn't know what to do, who to call, I was helpless," said James.

Today, James and his family are getting their house back.

Thanks to 600 Charlotte realtors, more than a dozen families are getting their homes back, as well.

"I was at a home an hour ago and a woman comes out and gives me a big hug. I don't even know this lady. It was just her way of showing heartfelt thanks. That's what really gets me is seeing the smiles on faces," said Joe Rempson, founder of Realtor's Care Day.

Again, this isn't a story about construction and these realtors aren't out here to sell homes.

"Most of our members make a living by helping people find homes. I think one of the greater missions is once they're found a home is to keep their homes. You'll find homeowners who have raised many generations in their homes. They've been in their homes for 20-30 years. Let's help keep them there for another 20-30 years," said Joe, the realtor.

"I'm real excited. I go by there every afternoon. I have a trailer in the back and I stay there a few nights. I don't think I could ever give that place up," said James, the homeowner.

Changing peoples' lives, one nail at a time.
