Monroe bridge delays rack up $12,000 in fines

Posted: Updated:
Bridge construction on Corinth Church Road in Monroe is planned to wrap on April 15, according to the Department of Transportation.

It's a project that was started last summer and was supposed to be finished around Thanksgiving. Yet, here we are approaching Easter, and crews are just finishing up the bridge.

"It's been a long time," Anthony Petrarca said.

Petrarca's home backs up to the bridge -- and all of it's construction.

"They could have built probably a Golden Gate Bridge in that time span," Petrarca joked.

What caused the delays? D.O.T. says that the contractors they hired made measurement errors on pieces of the box that were built off-site in Raleigh.

They said the miscalculations took weeks to correct in building new parts and on top of that, winter-weather conditions halted workflow for several months.

D.O.T. has been charging its contracting company $500 in fines each day since March 23. They say they are looking at April 15 as a final completion date.

All-in-all, the bridge will cost an estimated $700,000.

D.O.T. says a number of Union County politicians and residents have been in contact, and have been puzzled as to what the holdup has been.
