The debate over a water tower potentially placed in Weddington went to mediation this afternoon.

A group of plaintiffs are suing Union County over the tower being placed in their residential area and the county is counter-suing. Today, both sides spent over seven hours in mediation at the Union County Government Center.

We're told that the county plans on moving forward with placing the water tower on the piece of land they purchased behind the Providence Volunteer Fire Department near the intersection of Hemby and Weddington Matthews Road.

Water pressure problems have faced thousands who live in the area, but many would prefer an underground storage system, rather than the nearly 18-foot tall tower that's to be placed.

"So what we're trying to do is get ground storage," Linda Watt said. "It's feasible, it's doable and everyone will get benefit from it."

Chris Duggan, the attorney for the group filing a lawsuit against Union County, says the county is not willing to pay additional costs for the underground storage. If the residents opposed to the tower are willing, he says the county has given an option for them to pay additional costs on their own.

The group will also look to see if the town of Weddington can fund the project, publicly.

Watt is one of 325 that signed a petition against the water tower being zoned at the location behind the fire department. Watt lives less than a half mile away, and says she moved to Weddington because of it's rural atmosphere and beautiful landscape.

She says the water tower, would be an eye-sore.

"We don't want [Weddington] tarnished with something that [is] a 180-foot structure."

If a decision is not made soon, a hearing will be held on May 5. May 27 would be the final hearing date.
