Irwindale City Council Declares "Sriracha" Factory A Public Nuisance

Posted: Updated:

The factory that makes the popular "Sriracha" hot sauce, known for its green tops and rooster drawing on the bottle, has ninety days to clean up its act or close its doors.

The issue arose when residents complained that fumes from the grinding of red hot chili peppers were stinging their eyes and giving them headaches and coughing fits.

In a unanimous vote on Wednesday, the Irwindale City Council declared the factory a public nuisance.

The company now has 90 days to address the issue before city officials take further action.

If the odor persists, the city council will have the right to enter the plant and order changes.

The decision is handed down in this ongoing battle, even though air-quality experts testify that progress is being made.

Sriracha maker Huy Fong Foods, Inc. says the company has been working on its filtration system since the complaints first started and is committed to finding long-term solutions by June first.
