Vaccination Shots Offered After Hepatitis A Outbreak at Papa Johns Restaurant off Rocky River

Posted: Updated:
Charlotte, NC - Mecklenburg County health officials confirm there is a Hepatitis A outbreak at a Charlotte Papa Johns restaurant at 8016 Cambridge Commons Dr.

People who ate at the restaurant will need to get vaccinated immediately.

County health employees say a Papa Johns employee had Hepatitis A. He had been working for a couple weeks and He worked directly with several hundred food orders. In total, 2400 orders went out that may have come into contact with the virus.

If you ate there on or after March 28, there is a special vaccination clinic from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the health department on Billingsley Road. They've ordered thousands of vaccines to treat those who may have been infected.

Cabarrus County is also running one tonight from 4-8 p.m. at 300 Mooresville Street, Kannapolis.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection. It's usually contracted from contaminated food or water.

The Mecklenburg Health Department is asking people who may have been infected to watch for gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and vomiting. They also emphasize that jaundice -- a yellowing of the skin and eyes -- is a telltale sign of Hepatitis A.

Papa Johns has a hotline you can call for more information: 1-855-397-7777

You can also go to the Novant Health Urgent Care in Matthews to get tested.

The health department will also have vaccination shots this weekend at CPCC near Rocky River.

The state is taking care of the costs associated with the shots so it won't cost you anything to get vaccinated.

A spokesperson for Papa Johns says the store is sanitized and back open, and all employees have been vaccinated.
